Does anyone else have parents that are annoyed, aggravated, or even angry when you ask them to read at home with their child?
I was AMAZED last year at our back to school night at the attitude toward reading at home. Is 20 minutes really that much to ask for? I don't think so, but some thought it was impossible. So this year, I will be prepared with some helpful suggestions on how they can read 20 minutes every night!

It always breaks my heart when parents do that. I understand they are busy. However, it is WAY more important than playing video games and watching tv. (Sorry for the soapbox.) Thank you for the freebie.

one thing I tell parents is to put the subtitles on the tv. We have to meet them where they are, and go from there. I, too, get frustrated but at the same time if we don't give practical solutions.. it is just goes in one ear and out the other.
DeleteI have had parents come back and tell me how much they like the subtitles. It's addicting!!
Thanks for the page. I used it on my blog, crediting you!!

You are so smart to give parents a list of ideas! Thanks for posting, and for the freebie!
ReplyDeleteLove the freebie, but I would capitalize the "i." (old teacher here) We have a school-wide policy of reading 30 mintues nightly at home. (Pre-K up to 5th grade) However, I'm sure MANY do not do it! Sad, but true. You could also state the benefits of reading with your children.
